Nice Package: Kaffa Roastery, Helsinki

nice-package-01

A truly nice package is a gift that keeps on giving, finding new ways to delight and surprise with each passing day. We’ve had these bags from Kaffa in our studio for a few weeks, and every time we go back and look at them, we notice another little charming detail in the “Deep Space Animalia” design style. Finland is a hotbed of specialty coffee talent right now and we’re excited to show this work off.

As told to Sprudge by Kaffa roaster Alan Grosvenor and graphic designer Jari Salo.

When did the coffee package design debut?

Released September 2015.

Who designed the package?

Design by Jari Salo, freelance designer. Alan Grosvenor says, “This is our second bag collaboration with Jari. Last year, he did the graphic design for our N’Dumberi offering from Kenya. He is fantastic, both as a human being and as a designer.”

Please describe the look in your own words!

Jari Salo says, “The design is based on the secret Kenyan Quantum Space Program where the animals are the astronauts because they evolved past the human race by eating the magical space coffee berries.”

What coffee information do you share on the package? What’s the motivation behind that?

We offer information on varietal, region, country, planet(!), processing, altitude, flavor profiles, roast date and roaster’s name, and our roastery/cafe address in Helsinki. The label also features the Avainlippu (key flag), which is a trademarked symbol indicating the end product is produced entirely in Finland. What we couldn’t fit is that our green coffee buyer, Mike Akins, went to Nairobi, Kenya last harvest to visit Dormans and selected these coffees (Gachatha and Chorongi) with the help of the folks at Nordic Approach from Oslo, Norway.

Where is the bag manufactured?

The labels are designed in Finland and printed in Estonia. The bags are manufactured in China.

For package nerds, what *type of package* is it?

It is a heat-sealable package with a one-way valve and ziplock. Also note that the one-way valve is a secret airlock to space, so be careful!

Is the package recyclable? Any other pro-environment info about the package you want to share?

The bag is not recyclable, but it is fully reusable for many things besides coffee with the help of the ziplock. Reuse is the best form of recycling anyways. More info at www.kaffaroastery.fi
