The Build-Outs continue! Our 2016 edition of the Build-Outs Of Summer series—profiling exciting new openings in the world of coffee currently under construction—soldiers on with this profile of the new House Roots Coffee in Granada Hills, California.
As told to Sprudge by Thomas Kong, Brand Manager at House Roots Coffee.
For those who aren’t familiar, will you tell us about your company?
Born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, we are a group of community members deeply passionate about people, coffee, and the place we call home, our roots. As House Roots Coffee, we believe in providing affordable, freshly brewed coffee from the best roasters from around the world and inviting our customers to partner with us in “cup for a cause.” Profits from each brew, pastry, etc. will be divided and dedicated to local community programs, relief efforts, and non-profit projects overseas. In doing so, we aim to inspire our community to invest in people and use the power of their dollar to do more. In everything we do, we believe in walking with people from start to finish, whether this means caring about the last cup of coffee as much as we did the first or remaining committed to the causes we support. House Roots Coffee is dedicated to these three core values: Coffee, Community, Cause.
Can you tell us a bit about the new space?
The space we’re entering into used to be an old barber shop (which we think is pretty great). It’s a cozy space at just over 800 square feet. The focus of the space will be our long bar, almost like an old saloon. Customers will have the option to queue up in the front for quick takeaway drinks or wrap around to enjoy different “to stay” drink options. The goal for the space will be to create interaction between our customers and servers. We’re aiming to create a comfortable environment for customers to engage with our team.
What’s your approach to coffee?
Our approach is nothing new but we firmly believe and work hard to embody hospitality. The energy and effort we put into our coffee should only be as important as the people we’re serving. We believe that serving delicious coffee is the vessel for us to connect with our community. We remind ourselves daily that quality and hospitality go hand in hand, there’s no hierarchy.
Any machines, coffees, special equipment lined up?
Espresso will be pulled on our two-group La Marzocco Linea PB. For filter coffees we have a FETCO to batch brew coffees while also offering single-brewed options. We’ll have multiple taps in the space for nitro cold brew, fresh fruit sodas, and house-made kombuchas. We’ve been featuring a number of roasters throughout our time as a pop-up and we plan to continue those relationships with: Heart Roasters, Roseline Coffee, and Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters.
What’s your hopeful target opening date/month?
Our target opening month is late June/early July.
Are you working with craftspeople, architects, and/or creatives that you’d like to mention?
We’re fortunate enough to partner with a relatively new company called Good Luck Soda. They’ll provide freshly made seasonal sodas that we’ll feature on tap. We also have our in-house creative team or “culture team” to thank for interior design choices, signage, trays, and merchandise.
What’s the address?
16155 San Fernando Mission Boulevard, Granada Hills, California.
